Cost-cutting supermarket Aldi has opened a new store in Old Street this week. Yesterday (June 30) saw the launch of its tenth 'Local', smaller format shop in London. Amidst the cost of living crisis, Aldi is attempting to meet the growing demand of new customers in the city with smaller branches in more areas.
After successful trials in Balham in March 2019, the new Aldi Local is the tenth store, including other branches in Camden, Kilburn, Tooting and Kingston with another set to open on Finchley Road next month. As the shop falls within the M25, the Old Street store Aldi workers will earn up to £11.55 per hour, which exceeds the Living Wage Foundation’s recommended real living wage rates.
The 600m 2shops are usually found on high streets and have around 1,500 products - just 300 items fewer than a standard-sized Aldi store. The new store opened at 7am yesterday, with Paralympics GB’s Oliver Lam-Watson and Team GB’s Kate French cutting the red ribbon. Pupils from the local St Luke's C of E Primary School were also in attendance.

Lam-Watson said: “I’ve had a fantastic time opening the new Aldi this morning. It was an honour to help cut the ribbon and welcome customers inside for the first time.”
The athletes also promoted healthy eating by giving the first 30 people in the queue free bags of fruit and vegetables from Aldi's Super 6 range. They also spoke to the schoolchildren about the supermarket's Get Set to Eat Fresh campaign. French said: “It was great to speak with the children at St Luke's C of E Primary School about the importance of eating healthily and how it can be fun to plan and prepare meals as a family. Hopefully we’ve also managed to inspire the pupils to keep active and try different sports.”
The new store will be managed by Grant Ugwuegbulam-Condor, who said the opening morning was "wonderful." The shop will provide 30 locals with jobs.
Aldi Local in Old Street is asking local food banks and charities to register with Neighbourly to receive surplus food and perishable products in a bid to combat food waste. If charities would like to take part in the initiative, email: aldi@neighbourly.com.
The new location is at: 205 Old Street, London, EC1V 9QN. Opening times are from 7am to 11pm from Monday to Saturday, and 11am to 5pm on Sundays.
